Wood smoke a threat to people’s health

Many letters have been written to the editor about the harmful effects of exposure to coal-fired power plants. Very little has been written about the harmful effects of wood smoke that we are privileged to breathe during the cold winter months.

Wood smoke and cigarette smoke are quite similar, with many components of both being carcinogenic. It contains fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide and various irritant gases such as nitrogen oxide that can scar the lungs. The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that toxic air pollutants are components of wood smoke.

Lately locally the atmosphere has not been ridding itself of this toxicity. Coming out of a building in Lititz recently on a cold, still night, I smelled an extreme smell of wood smoke. This is very dangerous for people with asthma, chronic respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
