"Previous studies show that DNA methylation patterns are associated with atherosclerosis, ischemic heart
disease, and blood pressure while others have suggested DNA methylation as a biomarker for cardiovascular
disease. Moreover, exposure to air pollutants such as black carbon, particulate matter, benzene, and SO4
led to a genome-wide reduction in DNA methylation, or global hypomethylation, and were associated with
methylation levels of candidate genes."
