Ocean Beach Bonfires To Be Prohibited From November To February
October 12, 2016 10:19 AM

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Recreational beach fires will not be allowed at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach from Nov. 1 until the end of February, according to the National Park Service.

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s first “No-Burn” season coincides with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s winter Spare the Air season.

During the months of November through February, particulate matter pollution from wood burning and other sources can reach unhealthy levels in the Bay Area, park officials said.

The No-Burn season is part of the park service’s Ocean Beach Fire Program, which went into effect April 1 and also included the addition of four new fire pits to the beach for use during the burning season.

• The Surgeon General has determined that there is no safe level of exposure to ambient smoke!

• If you smell even a subtle odor of smoke, you are being exposed to poisonous and carcinogenic chemical compounds!

• Even a brief exposure to smoke raises blood pressure, (no matter what your state of health) and can cause blood clotting, stroke, or heart attack in vulnerable people. Even children experience elevated blood pressure when exposed to smoke!

• Since smoke drastically weakens the lungs' immune system, avoiding smoke is one of the best ways to prevent colds, flu, bronchitis, or risk of an even more serious respiratory illness, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis! Does your child have the flu? Chances are they have been exposed to ambient smoke!
