Pollution Solutions Come to District 62
Clean Air

May is Clean Air Month and Assembly Member Carter encourages everyone to do their part to protect air quality.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is offering an incentive program to replace wood-burning fireplaces with natural gas logs. The cost to participate is as low as $50.

In March, the AQMD advertised a mower exchange program in San Bernardino neighborhoods More than 500 gas-emitting mowers were swapped for zero-emission cordless electric lawnmowers. Low-emission leaf blowers were exchanged for blowers that produce exhaust pollution.

The wood-burning fireplace replacement program begins in July and will last 12 months. If you live in San Bernardino, call for more information at (909) 396-3030 or http://www.healthyhearths.org. Also, check out AQMD website to learn about other exchange programs offered in Southern California. http://aqmd.gov/.

• The Surgeon General has determined that there is no safe level of exposure to ambient smoke!

• If you smell even a subtle odor of smoke, you are being exposed to poisonous and carcinogenic chemical compounds!

• Even a brief exposure to smoke raises blood pressure, (no matter what your state of health) and can cause blood clotting, stroke, or heart attack in vulnerable people. Even children experience elevated blood pressure when exposed to smoke!

• Since smoke drastically weakens the lungs' immune system, avoiding smoke is one of the best ways to prevent colds, flu, bronchitis, or risk of an even more serious respiratory illness, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis! Does your child have the flu? Chances are they have been exposed to ambient smoke!
