Strathfield Council will receive a grant of $40,000 under the NSW Government Wood Smoke Reduction Program.

Environment Minister Robyn Parker said the NSW Government is concerned about wood smoke because of its potential adverse impacts on health, particularly for elderly people, children and those with existing health conditions, such as asthma.

“Wood smoke from wood heaters and open fireplaces is a significant contributor to air pollution particularly during the winter months,” Ms Parker said.

This is the first year Strathfield Council had taken part in the Wood Smoke Reduction Program.

Mayor of Strathfield Councillor Daniel Bott said the EPA has given Council the opportunity to investigate an issue that has previously not been communicated.

“Air pollution from wood smoke can be difficult to investigate but this grant provides significant assistance to improving the air pollution in Strathfield,” Cr Bott said.

“Through this program, Council will aim to decrease any air pollution complaints received as well as ensuring that the owners of wood heaters are aware of how to maintain and operate them in accordance with best practices to minimise smoke nuisance.”
