About the Northern Indiana Wood Stove Changeout program:

What Is It: The program is one of several Environmental Mitigation Projects that are a part of a consent decree between NIPSCO, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).

Program Objective: Minimize the effects of particulate air emissions and hazardous air pollution in the vicinities of Gary-Hammond, Michigan City, South Bend-Elkhart, and Fort Wayne

What does it do: Provide financial incentives for residential customers who replace, retrofit or upgrade their inefficient, higher polluting wood-burning stove or outdoor boiler with appliances that provide for cleaner burning, lower emissions and higher energy efficiency.

How much is the incentive: Residential clients changing out a wood stove or fireplace insert can receive up to $1500.00. If you change from wood to a gas unit the incentive can be up to $2000.00. Income qualified clients can receive up to $4000.00.

More Incentives: This program also offers incentives for upgrading your gas fired furnace or boiler up to $5000.00. Albert the Chimney Sweep does not work on these appliances. Contact your HVAC contractor or search the NIPSCO site above for participating contractors.

• The Surgeon General has determined that there is no safe level of exposure to ambient smoke!

• If you smell even a subtle odor of smoke, you are being exposed to poisonous and carcinogenic chemical compounds!

• Even a brief exposure to smoke raises blood pressure, (no matter what your state of health) and can cause blood clotting, stroke, or heart attack in vulnerable people. Even children experience elevated blood pressure when exposed to smoke!

• Since smoke drastically weakens the lungs' immune system, avoiding smoke is one of the best ways to prevent colds, flu, bronchitis, or risk of an even more serious respiratory illness, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis! Does your child have the flu? Chances are they have been exposed to ambient smoke!
