New Printable 3-Fold Brochure http://burningissues.org/WoodSmokeBroTG2.pdf, and a 'For The Children' handout that lists wood smoke toxic chemicals.

Dear Friends,

Burning Issues/Clean Air Revival, Inc. has counted on you in the past to appoint yourselves Smoke Reduction Specialists. Our new Wood Smoke brochure is a tool you can use. It can be copied in quantity and distributed. Print them out from our site: http://burningissues.org. (Go to Education and you will find both of them there with red 'new' signs.) Circulating basic wood smoke information and getting people to go to the web site are top priorities. This new brochure and handout will help.

Wood smoke is a complicated scientific, health and societal issue. We would like to develop additional concise brochures like this one, each with a different focus. With your help we can do more of this.

But, among those twenty pages one can see the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association announcing that wood burning appliance sales have increased 112 percent since 1992. First their campaign was, "Good smoke bad smoke burn it right." Now they are brazenly incorporating the extensive health data that Burning Issues/Clean Air Revival, Inc. has amassed on the web, and saying, "Wood smoke is a health hazard, buy our product and burn responsibly." Smoke is smoke. Trips to your local stores reveal the huge market that is involved in this industry, an industry that aggressively lobbies government, the press, and the public to sell more "lifestyle" products--and too bad about your health.

The hearth industry obscures the fact that each product sold--a wood stove, a backyard fire pit, a wood-fire-baked pizza--involves burning and smoke and causes what has grown to be an enormous public health hazard. Profits are enormous, too. Like the tobacco companies, the wood burning appliance companies market smoke as slick, and hip, while the true product is illness and premature death.

Burning Issues hears from many persons in distress, such as a mother in California who wrote:
"I spoke with you on the phone the other day about our wood burning stove and about my son who developed chronic bronchitis from pneumonia at age one year. He was intubated and on life support. That was three years ago. He was coughing all last winter. Then, after he had been cough-free this summer, we again started up the stove, and his congestion, first nasal, then upper airway constriction, then chest and mucus cough, started right up. Last winter I thought his illness was weak immunity and susceptibility to bronchitis, but this year his illness corresponding to the wood smoke prompted me to get online and check it out, which brought me to your site. I am reading absolutely everything. I put my foot down and the stove is out the door. Basically I have found nothing good online about wood smoke for a child with lung conditions, or anyone for that matter. Why was I never informed of this by my physician? Why are there not warning labels on stoves? Thank you for your hard work on informing the public, and Thank God I found this info in time. Hopefully I can get our house formed into a safe haven, rather than a danger zone."

Here is a testimonial from a medical doctor in Pennsylvania: "I got the stove taken out today by professionals. What a relief not to have that creosote smell in the house. After 18 years of breathing those fumes is it no wonder that I am sick. I already feel better. Thanks for all your help. You were the only one that was able to clearly tell me of the health hazards. I was concerned but not enough to take action until talking with you."

The majority of calls and letters, the most frustrating ones, are from victims of smoke who suffer, some on a daily basis, by burners who fill their houses and neighborhoods with smoke. In 85% of the cases the perpetrators and the government agencies involved with health and environment refuse to protect the victims.

Burning Issues is asking concerned citizens to help spread the word in any way you can. Your expenses such as printing and mailing the brochure, or cash donations to BurningIssues.org, are tax deductible. Consider making a donation in memory of a loved one. Here at Burning Issues attending scientific conferences, updating computer and software, purchasing a new particulate air monitor will help us to do this job.

If you are tired of wood smoke show your concern by educating others. Thank you for the care, concern and support you have given over and over again to make Burning Issues/Clean Air Revival, Inc. a voice of truth that is having international impact.

My personal wish for us all is to have the health giving blessing of clean air in all of our years to come.

Sincerely,
Mary J. Rozenberg
