Cigarette Smoke From Next Door - How To Stop It?

First post here.. Been looking for advice, but no-one seems to have any beyond "gosh, that's a tough one!"

(In Winnipeg, Canada, by the way.)

My family just moved into (purchased) a side-by-side home (commonly known as a 'semi-detached' in the UK). Basically, It's one building with a dividing wall down the middle making two houses. (Not the same as a duplex, where someone lives upstairs and someone downstairs.)

I've met the people who own the other side of the building, and they seem very nice. However, they smoke, and the smell of their cigarettes is finding its way into our house. As a family of non-smokers, this is quite annoying and I'd like to put a stop to it.

The smell seems strongest in our bedroom, but I've also smelled it in different areas of the house. I'm unsure if the smell is entering the cold air return for the furnace in the bedroom and being transported all over, or if it's infiltrating in other places. We may also have shared attic space that may not be divided (it's not accessible from within the house - you need to go up a ladder and open a hatch on the gable end to get in - I haven't looked yet.)

We both own the properties, so there's no landlord involved that we can complain to. I also just met these people and don't want to stir up animosity with them by attempting to tell them that they can't smoke in their own home as it bothers me. Alternatively, I don't want to silently put up with this for god-knows-how-many-years.

I'm hopefully going to remove the baseboards from the bottom of the wall in the bedroom where it meets the adjoining wall and use spray-foam to totally seal the air gap between the bottom of the wall and the floor. Hopefully that will help. Other than that, I'm at my wit's end with it as we like the house and the area and this is the only major problem we have with the place.

Any help most graciously accepted.

It might be possible to create a positive pressure in the room that is next to the neighbor's.
The air intake can be from a far corner of the house/property, where smoke/odor is minimal.

I removed the baseboards in the bedroom and sealed the airspace between the floor and drywall with spray foam this evening - will have to see if it makes a difference. I also sprayed into the phone socket and wall outlets on the back wall (but then I found out that you're only supposed to foam around the outside of electrical outlets, so I'm going to have to scrape the insides out once they're dry. )

I used to install cellulose wall and ceiling insulation a few years back, and I was thinking that dumping a bunch of that stuff into the attic (if there's nothing up there already) would not only keep our heat & cooling in - it would keep smokey's emissions out as well. I'll have to see if that's a viable option.
