In Shutdown Mode
by Julie Mellum

We all know that sinking feeling when our computer shuts down unexpectedly.
Our work gets cut off. Our hard drive may crash, losing valuable data when
exposed to a deadly virus or mishandling and it just can't handle the load
anymore.

In the world outside, beehives are disappearing, fish and frogs are morphing
genders, fine particulates from wood smoke are choking out cloud formations
and heating up the globe, vehicle exhaust is making toxic soup in our
streets, asthma is skyrocketing, and other environmental illnesses are on
the rise. Reproductive birth defects, once the province of frogs, now
threaten the human race.

What's going on? What will it take to wake us up and demand that our
elected officials help get our planet back online? To save our files, so to
speak. The analogy to a fatal computer failure is not so far fetched when
you realize that the signs are there that our planet is indeed preparing to
shut down.

We need to stop polluting in hopes of saving our files. Let's start by
stopping recreational wood burning, driving and idling our vehicles less,
and halting the use of toxic fragrance chemicals, which compromise health,
air, water and our crops. Let's boot a new program of better ecology,
starting in our own back yards.
