The major sources of antropogenic nanoparticles in the environment are combustion processes and emissions from consumer products and goods. In urban environments, 70 % of airborne fine particles result from combustion and 50 % are due to primary emissions from combustion sources.

Soot particles may be formed in all combustion reactions, not only in diesel engines, but also from gasoline, alcohol, wood, coal and waste combustion.
