Utah Consultation

The PM2.5 State Implementation Plan (SIP) development process is nearing completion. The Utah Air Quality Board adopted the Logan, UT-ID PM2.5 Nonattainment SIP on December 5, 2012.

The majority of the rules that are part of the SIP have also been adopted by the Board.

During the SIP and rule comment periods, comments can be submitted in writing at:

or by email to Mark Berger

A new study has just been published showing that the contribution of woodsmoke has been seriously under-estimated - http://www.airquality.utah.gov/Air-Qual ... tation.pdf

Recommendations from that study to reduce woodsmoke are listed below. It would be well worth commenting on the SIP and pointing out the importance of these proposed measures and that they should be implemented immediately.
Improved community reporting
• Make the complaint number more prominent on DAQ’s website?
• How are complaints addressed (after business hours)? Incentives for reduced emissions
• Through local building codes to promote better choices.

Incentives to remove sole-source wood heating.
• Incentives to remove the oldest technology wood stoves.

Restructure existing rules?
• Make no burn the default from late December to late January unless DAQ calls a burn day
