HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 15-year-old boy is in an upstate New York burn unit after he was engulfed in flames when someone threw liquid fuel on a bonfire.

State police tell The Post-Star of Glens Falls (bit.ly/1S38TRk) that Raymond Winchell III was at a family gathering last Saturday night in Hampton, a rural Washington County town on the Vermont border 65 miles northeast of Albany.

Troopers say the teen was standing next to a bonfire when someone splashed fuel onto it. Some of the fuel hit Winchell, setting him on fire.

His family says the boy suffered second- and third-degree burns over much of his body. He's in the burn unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

The teen is a student at Schenectady High School.

Police say alcohol wasn't involved in the accident. No charges are expected.
