Julia Roberts and Hillary Clinton say providing cleaner burning stoves to developing countries could save lives and help the climate.

“The impact goes beyond people's health,” the “Erin Brockovich” star and the secretary of state wrote in a USA Today op-ed published Friday. “Burning these fuels produces carbon dioxide, methane and black carbon, which contribute to climate change. And cutting down trees for fuel causes natural habitats to dry up, forests to disappear and soil to erode.”

Millions of people die each year because of smoke from traditional cookstoves and open fires that rely on wood, dung or charcoal for fuel, according to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. Those numbers are tilted steeply toward women and children in developing nations, who inhale the dangerously high concentration of chemicals and can develop diseases including lung cancer and cataracts.

“All of this presents a major challenge — but it can be solved,” Roberts and Clinton wrote. “If we can get cleaner, more efficient cookstoves in wider use throughout the developing world, we can save lives, cut back on carbon emissions and create new economic opportunities for millions of women.

“Fortunately, the technology for clean cookstoves already exists. Several companies are already producing them, and countries like India, China and Mexico have begun to introduce them in national programs. But the uptake has been slow, because there hasn't been a wide-scale effort to coordinate these efforts, or to make the stoves affordable in the developing world.”

Roberts will serve as a global ambassador for the alliance, the organization also announced Friday.

She became interested in clean cookstoves after interviewing Clinton for a special on the Oprah Winfrey Network, which will air Saturday. She will work with the alliance to provide clean, efficient stoves to developing nations, advocate for stove standards and indoor air quality guidelines, fund research for clean technologies and lobby for lower taxes and tariffs.

Clinton has long been concerned with inefficient cookstoves and smoke inhalation.

“Today, because of technological breakthroughs, new carbon financing tools and growing private sector engagement, we can finally envision a future in which open fires and dirty stoves are replaced by clean, efficient and affordable stoves and fuels all over the world — stoves that still cost as little as $25,” Clinton said in 2010. “By upgrading these stoves, millions of lives could be saved and improved. This could be as transformative as bed nets or even vaccines.”

The alliance, launched in 2010 at the Clinton Global Initiative forum, is backed by the Department of Energy, the EPA, the State Department, HHS, the United Nations Foundation, Shell and dozens of other companies and foreign nations.

• The Surgeon General has determined that there is no safe level of exposure to ambient smoke!

• If you smell even a subtle odor of smoke, you are being exposed to poisonous and carcinogenic chemical compounds!

• Even a brief exposure to smoke raises blood pressure, (no matter what your state of health) and can cause blood clotting, stroke, or heart attack in vulnerable people. Even children experience elevated blood pressure when exposed to smoke!

• Since smoke drastically weakens the lungs' immune system, avoiding smoke is one of the best ways to prevent colds, flu, bronchitis, or risk of an even more serious respiratory illness, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis! Does your child have the flu? Chances are they have been exposed to ambient smoke!

I love how everyone is giving their effort to save the earth from all the smokes and bad emissions. Support from personalities are a huge help in making this campaign move.
