Air board needed to fight pollution

In Jay Todesco's letter to the editor, he agrees that the Bay Area Air Quality Management District was created because we needed to rid ourselves of dirty and unhealthy air.

Because he thinks our air is now clean enough, he wants to abolish the air board. Sure it's cleaner, but not because of voluntary emission controls. Enforcement of rules and regulations keeps the air clean.

I suppose Todesco is also in favor of abolishing local police because they have fallen under the control of unaccountable law-and-order activists. With crime way down, police agencies now only bother us with burdensome rules and regulations, making it difficult for criminals to make a decent living. If Todesco and others want to exercise their freedom to burn wood in their fireplaces, let them, but recirculate the wood smoke from their fire places back into their own homes. Wood burning is going the way of the buggy whip, and we all survived that change.

• The Surgeon General has determined that there is no safe level of exposure to ambient smoke!

• If you smell even a subtle odor of smoke, you are being exposed to poisonous and carcinogenic chemical compounds!

• Even a brief exposure to smoke raises blood pressure, (no matter what your state of health) and can cause blood clotting, stroke, or heart attack in vulnerable people. Even children experience elevated blood pressure when exposed to smoke!

• Since smoke drastically weakens the lungs' immune system, avoiding smoke is one of the best ways to prevent colds, flu, bronchitis, or risk of an even more serious respiratory illness, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis! Does your child have the flu? Chances are they have been exposed to ambient smoke!
